Youth baseball: Bismarck eliminates Bemidji from 12-year-old Cal Ripken region tournament
BURLINGTON, Colo. -- Bemidji's trip to the 12-year-old Midwest Region Cal Ripken tournament ended Friday morning as the team lost 14-1 to Bismarck in the loser's bracket final.
The loss was Bemidji's second in the double-elimination tourney while Bismarck and Grand Forks advanced to the championship series.
"We finished third in the region tournament and we'll take that," said Bemidji coach Bruce Dahlin. "It was a great experience for everybody."
Bismarck took charge early, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. The North Dakota champion cemented the win with eight runs in the third. The winners had 10 hits but also profited by seven Bemidji errors.
Bemidji scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth when Troy Jarvi and Casey McNamara had singles and Reid Colley plated Jarvi with a ground ball.
"It wasn't our day," Dahlin said. "But if someone had offered us third place in the regional when the season started we certainly would have taken it.
"We had a great season."
