Youth baseball: Bemidji 12-year-olds hammer East Central, Colo. 17-0 in Cal Ripken regional

BURLINGTON, Colo. — Bemidji’s 12-year-old Cal Ripken baseball team went 2-0 Wednesday, staying alive stay alive in the double-elimination Midwest Regional tournament here.

Bemidji blasted East Central, Colo., 17-0 Wednesday morning then topped the Mineral Area Americans of Ste. Genevieve, Mo., 18-2 Wednesday afternoon.

In Tuesday’s late game Bemidji fell 5-3 to Bismarck, N.D.

Bemidji must win the rest of its games if it hopes to capture the title in the eight-team tourney.

Bemidji will take on a team from Kansas at 10 a.m. today in order to stay alive in the tournament.

On Wednesday morning Bemidji took the first step on that journey with the lopsided win. Spearheading the 14-hit attack were Casey McNamara who smacked two triples, Reese Dreyer who contributed a double and two singles and Troy Jarvi and Reid Colley who each belted a single and a triple.

Peter Moen started on the Bemidji mound and left after two innings with a 12-0 lead. Vinnie Tesch worked the final two frames.

Bemidji scored six runs in the opening stanza and Steven Peterson keyed the uprising with a three-run double.

McNamara’s bases clearing triple highlighted a six-run second and Dreyer’s single helped Bemidji score a run in the third.

Bemidji added an exclamation point to the win with four runs in the fourth. Colley and Jarvi each belted triples in the frame and Colley’s came with the bases loaded.

In the other game Wednesday, Bemidji used a 13-run fourth inning to rout Mineral Area.

Bemidji had a 5-2 lead going into the fourth inning but broke it open with a huge inning to put the game out of reach.

McNamara went 2-for-3 with a home run while Tesch went 3-for-3 with two triples and Dryer was 2-for-2 with a double.

Colby Carlson pitched three innings and got the win while Steven Peterson pitched the fourth and final inning.
