EAST GRAND FORKS – Jess Yost had her best game of the year Friday as the senior dominated the lane, notched her 1,000th rebound, scored 32 points and helped the Bemidji girls basketball team defeat East Grand Forks 68-64 in overtime.

The teams were knotted 59-59 after regulation but the Lumberjacks took charge in the extra period. Casey Palmer set the tone with a rebound basket and a free throw and Jessa Lusby upped the advantage to 64-59 when she converted a breakaway.

Palmer added a pair of free throws to give the Jacks a 66-59 cushion and EGF never was able to draw closer than four points the rest of the way.

“We did what we needed to do to get a ‘W’,” said Bemidji coach Rick Kehoe whose team improved to 4-14.

“Offensively, if we took care of the ball we got good looks at the basket. And Jess played her best game of the year. She commanded everything inside and also helped out on the perimeter.”

The Green Wave was led by Kelsey Schienk who scored 29 points, hitting eight field goals, including four from 3-point land.

Schienk, however was a non-factor in the overtime, contributing only three free throws.

“Late in the game our goal was to take her out of the offensive equation,” Kehoe said. “We told the girls that she was not going to touch the ball and after we did that we really slowed her down.”

Palmer also had a productive evening as she scored 14 points, eight of them coming from the free throw line.

Lusby finished with eight points.

Bemidji was without the services of Kelsey Olson who sustained a back injury during a recent practice session. Olson will be out indefinitely and probably will miss Tuesday’s home game against Brainerd.
