Wrestling: Bemidji's Johnson, Maas in hunt for Big Bear titles
CASS LAKE — Kade Johnson at 182 pounds and Brian Maas at 113 remain in the hunt for individual championships at the Big Bear wrestling tournament hosted by Blackduck-Cass Lake-Bena.
Both Bemidji wrestlers were unbeaten in Friday’s first day of action. Maas received a bye in the opening round and then won a pair of matches via pins. His first victim was Alhassan Banruara of Robbinsdale and his second match was against A.J. Bethea of Hibbing. Both of the pins came in the first period.
In today’s semifinals Maas will face Jeremiah Harper of New York Mills.
Johnson recorded three pins in as many matches Friday. In his opener he stopped Dakota Zimmer of WHAN in 37 seconds and he followed that with a pin of Zach Lutz of Crookston in 1:22. In the quarterfinals Johnson slammed Drew Peterson of Staples in 1:29.
Today finds Johnson meeting Vaughn Johnson of Willmar.
Chance Hinrichs went 0-2 at 106 pounds, losing by a pin in the opening round and then by a 6-4 decision.
At 120 Indi Farsis won his first match with a third-period pin but was pinned in the second period of the second round. He stayed alive, however, by posting a pair of pin victories in the consolation round.
Tyler Maas at 126 had a first-round bye and then lost by pin. After winning his first consolation match Maas dropped a decision.
At 132 Own Lucas dropped his opener, won his second match and they lost by a pin.
Lucas Gast went 0-2 at 145 and at 152 Robert Treuer went 2-2.
Gannon Strain opened with two victories but lost 9-2 in the 145-pound quarterfinals.
Nick Peterson is alive in the 170 division after winning three of his four matches. He took his opener with a pin but lost 14-5 to Daven Staples of BCLB in the second round. Peterson bounced back with a pair of pin wins and is still in the consolation bracket.
Brody Wilander followed a similar path at 195, winning his first match, losing his second but winning his next two.
At 220 Wyatt Yoemans won his first two but lost in the quarterfinals.
BCLB also is having a good tournament and has a pair of wrestlers still in the championship hunt. Andrew Nissen has reached the semifinals at 106 and Staples is yet to lose at 170.
Advancing to the semifinals for Fosston-Bagley is Sam Manecke in the 160- pound division.
Wrestling action resumes at 11 a.m. today at Cass Lake-Bena High School.
