WRESTLING: Bemidji tops Thief River Falls, loses to Perham
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- After a one-night delay caused by poor travel conditions the Bemidji High School wrestlers began their season Friday in a triangular at Thief River Falls.
In their opening match the Lumberjacks fell 37-27 to Perham but they fared better in the nightcap, dominating the host team 46-25.
In the win over the Prowlers BHS won nine of the 14 matches and took five of them by pins. The Jacks also received one forfeit and claimed three matches by decision.
Chance Hinrichs and Jon Solum set the pace as they won decisions at 106 and 113. Brian Maas reached a personal milestone in his 120-pound match as the junior posted his 100th career victory with a second-period pin of Josh Bernier.
Indi Farris wrestled well against Stephen Holecek in the 126-pound match but Holecek, who placed at state last winter, eventually pinned Farris late in the third period.
Bemidji’s Dylon Sauceda answered at 132, however, as he pinned Kyle Fowler in the second period to up the Jacks’ lead to 19-6.
After dropping the 138-pound match the Lumberjacks claimed five of the next six matches. Robert Treuer started the streak as he needed only 12 seconds to pin his 145-pound opponent. At 160 Gannon Strain hung on for a 9-7 victory and Nick Peterson followed with a pin at 170. Kade Johnson duplicated that result at 182 and Brody Wilander was awarded a forfeit at 220.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action today at the Fosston Invitational.
