WRESTLING: Bemidji tops Sartell, falls to Brainerd in tri meet
BRAINERD – The Bemidji wrestling team split its triangular meet here Tuesday night.
The Lumberjacks steamrolled past Sartell-St. Stephen in the opener, 45-15, before dropping a close match against hosts Brainerd, 39-34 in the nightcap.
In the opening match, the Lumberjacks won 12 of the 14 matches; one of said matches was ended when Brody Wilander was injured and had to lose by injury default.
In the other 12 matches, however, it was all Lumberjacks.
Logan Crosby, Craig Maas and Wyatt Yeomanns all pinned their opponents, while Al Johnson won by forfeit to help the Jacks cruise past the Sabers.
In the nightcap, however, it was a different story.
The Lumberjacks started strong but a few forfeits in the middle and heavy weight classes (at 160 and 195, necessitated because of Wilander’s injury) proved to be the difference.
However, the Jacks did get pins from Brian Maas at 113, Crosby at 126, Kade Johnson at 170 and Al Johnson at heavyweight.
The Warriors, though, also pinned the Lumberjacks four times to escape with the narrow victory.
Bemidji will return to the mat twice this week. They’ll take on Pine River-Backus and Pequot Lakes at 7:15 p.m. Thursday before returning home Friday to host Moorhead and St. Cloud Tech in a triangular.
