CASS LAKE – Prior to the start of the Big Bear tournament here Bemidji High School coach Rance Bahr would have been pleased to see the Lumberjacks bunched somewhere in the top 10 after Friday’s action.

When the lights were turned off at the CLB high school and middle school gyms Friday night, however, Bemidji was in third place with 107 points.

Hutchinson led the way with 127 and Willmar had 109.5. A distant fourth was Thief River Falls with 97.5.

“We thought anywhere in the top 10 would have been great but to be in third place, in a tournament that has so many great wrestlers, is very impressive,” Bahr said.

The Lumberjacks advanced six wrestlers into today’s semifinal round – Brian Maas at 113, Logan Crosby at 126, Craig Maas at 132, Drew Peterson at 160, Kade Johnson at 170 and Alex Johnson at heavyweight.

Brian Maas recorded two pins and a decision win Friday as did Logan Crosby, Craig Maas and Peterson. Kade and Alex Johnson each posted three pins Friday.

BCLB advanced two wrestlers into today’s semifinals. Andrew Nissen accomplished the feat at 106 and Brady Gross did it at 182.

Fosston-Bagley’s semifinal advancer was Jordan Murphy at 220 while Collin Huckbody of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley-Nevis will wrestle in today’s semifinals at 182.

“We’re having a good tournament so far,” Bahr said. “The kids put together a great effort on Friday.”
