BRAINERD – Individual championships by Brian Maas at 113 and Kade Johnson at 170 powered the Bemidji wrestlers to third place at the Paul Bunyan Invitational which was held Friday and Saturday in Brainerd.
Frazee won the invitational with 193.5 points while Foley had 171 and the Lumberjacks 142.
Brian Maas followed Friday’s bye and pin victory with a pair of one-sided decision wins on Saturday. In the title match he thumped Byron Byer of Frazee 11-3.
Kade Johnson also went 4-0, winning a pair of close decisions Friday and posting a pin and a 6-2 decision on Saturday. In the title match he stopped Colton Vekved of Becker 6-2.
Earning runner-up finishes for the Jacks were Craig Maas at 138 and Alex Johnson at heavyweight. Craig Maas won his first match Saturday 4-2 but lost 4-3 to Hunter Sorenson of Frazee in the championship bout.
Alex Johnson pinned Cameron Svihia of Foley Saturday before losing via a pin to Connor Swanson of Little Falls.
Placing fourth was Logan Crosby at 132 while Dylon Sauceda was fifth at 126 and Robert Treuer seventh at 145.
Bemidji’s next action is Thursday when its hosts Grand Rapids.
