BEMIDJI – Because of last week’s icy road conditions the Bemidji wrestling team was forced to cancel a dual meet with Hibbing and the annual Rick Lee Invitational.

Those lost matches created a 12-day gap between starts. Thursday at the BHS gym the Lumberjacks finally returned to the mat and Bemidji wasted no time regaining its form.

The evening started with a 54-18 victory over Fosston-Bagley and ended with a 46-21 win over Blackduck-Cass Lake-Bena.

In the opening meet BHS captured eight of the 12 contested matches and won two others via forfeits.

After spotting Bagley-Fosston a 3-0 lead the Jacks claimed the next six bouts. The stretch was highlighted by pin victories by Tyler O’Beirne at 113, Brian Maas at 120, Logan Crosby at 132 and Robert Treuer at 145.

Later in the meet Brody Wilander would win by a pin at 189 and Alex Johnson would duplicate that result at heavyweight.

Bemidji also posted decision victories by Dylan Sauceda at 126 and Josh Dreyer at 182. Craig Maas was awarded a forfeit win at 138 and Kade Johnson won the same way at 170.

In Thursday’s late meet BHS grabbed a 28-6 lead by winning seven of the first eight matches and never let BCLB back into contention.

Tyler Maas started the Jacks on their winning ways with a decision win over David Foster. Brian Maas stopped Andrew Nissen 21-7 and Sauceda and Crosby followed with pin victories.

Craig Maas, Treuer and Gannon Strain capped the early success with decision wins.

Kade Johnson and Wyatt Yoemans added pin victories at 170 and 220 and heavyweight Al Johnson was awarded a forfeit for the final six team points.

BCLB was led by Kyle Michalek, Daven Staples and Tanner Templin who recorded pins. Nate Jablonski contributed a decision victory.

Thursday’s wins upped Bemidji’s dual record to 7-5. The Lumberjacks return to action Saturday at the Thief River Falls Invitational.
