Wrestling: Bemidji receives fourth seed for Section 8-3A meet
BEMIDJI — The Bemidji wrestling team earned the fourth seed in the Section 8-3A team tournament and will host the event Saturday. The Lumberjacks will begin their quest for the section title at 1 p.m. when they battle No. 5 Sartell.
The action begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Bemidji High School with No. 8 Sauk Rapids squaring off against No. 9 St. Cloud Apollo in a play-in match.
That winner will tangle with top-ranked Little Falls at 1 p.m. At the same time BHS will take on Sartell.
The lower-bracket quarterfinal matches find No. 2 Moorhead tackling No. 7 Brainerd and No. 3 Alexandria meeting No. 6 St. Cloud Tech.
The semifinals are scheduled for 3 p.m. and the Section 8-3A championship match will begin around 5 p.m.
Little Falls was the unanimous choice for the top seed and Moorhead was the clear-cut No. 2 pick. Alexandria had 17 points in the coaches’ poll while BHS had 24. Sartell finished with 26, St. Cloud Tech 32, Brainerd 37, Sauk Rapids 42 and St. Cloud Apollo 48.
Bemidji will take a 15-5 record into the tournament and the Jacks were 2-2 against section opponents, defeating Brainerd 46-24 and St. Cloud Tech 48-13 while losing to Sartell 33-32 and Moorhead 41-22.
On Monday the Lumberjacks closed their regular season with a 55-12 win at Fosston-Bagley. BHS won 11 of the individual matches and starting the run was Jon Solum who posted a 7-4 decision victory at 106 pounds. Chance Hinrichs won by a first-period pin at 113 and Brian Maas ended the regular season unbeaten as he pinned Tommy Snobl in 1:24 at 120.
Tyler Maas claimed a 17-13 decision at 125, Tyler O’Beirne won by forfeit at 132 and Dylon Sauceda pinned his foe at 138. In the later weights Nick Peterson won a decision at 170, unbeaten Kade Johnson pinned Zach Larsen in 33 seconds at 182, Brody Wilander posted a major decision at 195, Wyatt Yoemans recorded a pin at 220 and Gabe Flaherty did the same at heavyweight.
In Section 7A Blackduck-Cass Lake-Bena is the third seed and opens its tournament action 7 p.m. today (Tuesday) at home against No. 6 Mille Lacs.
If the Bears win that match they will head to Holdingford on Friday for the section semifinals at 6 p.m. and the championship match at 7:30 p.m.
In Section 8-2A Fosston-Bagley is the sixth seed and will tangle with No. 11 Albany 11 a.m. Friday at the Ralph Englestad Arena in Thief River Falls. A win in that match would advance the Greyhounds to the 2 p.m. match against No. 3 Thief River Falls.
The semifinals will be at 4 p.m. and the title match at 6 p.m.
