Wrestling: Bemidji finishes second at Rick Lee Invitational
BEMIDJI -- The successful winter for the Bemidji wrestling team continued Saturday as the Lumberjacks finished second at their annual Rick Lee Invitational.
Badger-Greenbush-Middle River scored 194 team points and edged Bemidji, which tallied 186. Right behind Bemidji's heels was Blackduck-Cass Lake-Bena which tallied 179.
Trailing the leaders were Blaine (133), Aitkin (132), Royalton (120.5), Cloquet (95.5), Columbia Heights (51) and Nashwauk-Keewatin (25).
Bolstering Bemidji's finish were individual championships by Brian Maas at 113, Dylon Sauceda at 132 and Kade Johnson at 182. Contributing runner-up finishes were Robert Treuer at 138 and Brody Wilander at 195. Adding third-place points were Chance Hinrichs at 106, Gannon Strain at 160 and Wyatt Yoemans at 220.
Maas, the top-ranked wrestler in the Minnesota Class 3A ranks at 113 pounds, entered the competition 19-0 and he added three more victories to his individual total. He opened with a pair of pins and then capped his day with an 11-2 decision victory over Nash Sovde of BGMR.
Sauceda improved to 18-3 overall with three more wins and all three came via pins. In the title match he stopped Devin Dostal of BGMR in 4:44.
Johnson was rated No. 4 in the state's Class 3A rankings at 195 pounds prior to the weekend and he could advance a spot or two after posting three pin wins in the past two days. Saturday he collected two more pins and neither took more than 19 seconds. After a first-round bye Johnson posted a 13-second fall and in the title match he pinned Kyle Lange of Royalton in 19 seconds.
Treuer went 2-1 Saturday, the loss being a 7-2 decision in the title bout against Reid Borchardt of Cloquet.
Wilander also went 2-1, losing the championship match 11-2 to Glenn Meyers of Blaine.
Hinrichs dropped his first match at 103 pounds but bounced back with three victories to claim third place.
With the help of two byes, Yoemans advanced to the third-place match where he pinned Mohamad Hagazi of Columbia Heights in 2:45.
BCLB earned three individual championships as Andrew Nissen (19-1) claimed the 106-pound title, Mason Frenzel (17-7) won the 145-pound crown and Nathan Jablonski (9-2) was the champ at 160.
Adding seconds for the Bears were Kyle Michalek at 126 and Daven Staples at 170. Placing third for the Bears were Tanner George at 132 and Tanner Templin at 195.
