When the season started the Bemidji wrestlers established two goals for the 2010-11 campaign: finish the year with at least a .500 record and make a run at the section championship.

Both of those goals seemed lofty at the time, especially considering that the Lumberjacks posted only a 6-18 record a year ago.

But persistence and hard work have paid dividends and BHS successfully achieved its first goal, finishing the regular season with an 18-9 record.

Today the journey begins for the second half of the preseason goals as Bemidji will join its 8-3A peers in Sauk Rapids for the section tournament.

During the regular season the Jacks won six of their seven matches against section foes, the lone loss being a 36-31 decision against Willmar which was 8-0 in section play.

Bemidji's victims included St. Cloud Tech (44-32), Rocori (51-21), St. Cloud Apollo (45-22), Moorhead (45-23), Alexandria (45-3) and Sauk Rapids (39-30).

To no one's surprise Willmar gained the top seed and Bemidji was a near unanimous pick for second.

As a reward for the second seed BHS will battle either No. 7 St. Cloud Tech or No. 10 Rocori at 1 p.m. today in the quarterfinals. Those teams will square off at 11:30 a.m. for the right to face the Lumberjacks.

Today's semifinals are set for 3 p.m. while the title match will be staged at 5 p.m.
