Women's hockey: BSU loses to Ohio St. in final home game
BEMIDJI — The BSU women’s hockey team came into Saturday afternoon’s game against Ohio State just one point behind Ohio State for fifth place in the WCHA standings.
The math for the Beavers was simple: Win and control their own fate for the WCHA playoffs. Lose and they needed some help.
Now it looks like the Beavers will need some help.
The Beavers and the Buckeyes took a 1-1 tie into the third period but Ohio State scored twice in the third period and beat BSU 3-1 at the Sanford Center, earning the series split after BSU won 4-1 on Friday.
The teams each have two games remaining before the playoffs begin. BSU travels to St. Cloud State while Ohio State hosts North Dakota.
BSU (10-19-3, 7-17-3 WCHA) had a 25-24 shot advantage over the Buckeyes (12-15-5, 7-14-5), including a 13-7 edge in the third period, but OSU scored two times in the final frame.
Tess Dusik scored the lone BSU goal with three seconds to go in the first; getting a feed from Kristine Grenier to tie the game up at 1-1. Sara Schmitt had scored the first goal for OSU 15 minutes into the game.
The teams were scoreless in the second period but the Buckeyes broke the tie with Danielle Gagne’s score 7:06 into the period.
Ally Tarr made it 3-1 with just more than two minutes to go in the game.
Brittni Mowat made 21 saves for BSU in the loss while Chelsea Knapp had 24 for Ohio State in the win.
Saturday’s game represented the final regular season home game for six BSU seniors. The seniors include defenseman Dusik, forward Emily McKnight, defenseman Alex Ehlert, goaltender Jessica Havel, defenseman Allie Duellman and defenseman Danielle Williams.
