WOMEN'S HOCKEY: Bemidji State squanders 3-0 lead, falls 4-3 to Maine

BEMIDJI – The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team outshot Maine 60-20 but squandered a 3-0 lead in the third period Friday and dropped a 4-3 decision at the Sanford Center.

BSU staked itself to a 3-0 lead in the first period after Kaitlyn Tougas and Hanna Moher tallied goals 2:52 apart and senior captain Sadie Lundquist tipped home a point shot on the power play with 31 seconds left in the frame.

Kristin Huber assisted on the first two goals.

After a scoreless second period, Audra Richards got Maine on the board 47 seconds into the final stanza with a breakaway goal. Just 54 seconds later Abbey Cook made it 3-2.

Katey Massey tied the score at the 11:54 mark and Tori Pasquariello got the game-winner at 14:18 by burying a loose puck in front.

Netminder Brittany Ott came on in relief of Meghann Treacy to start the second and stopped all 37 shots she faced after Treacy allowed three BSU goals on 23 shots. Beaver netminder Abby Ryplanski stopped 16 of 20 Black Bear offerings.

The two teams play again 7 p.m. Saturday at the Sanford Center.
