Women's hockey: Bemidji St. falls 6-2 to UND
BEMIDJI — Meghan Dufault collected a hat trick to lead North Dakota to a 6-2 women’s hockey victory over Bemidji State Friday afternoon at the Sanford Center.
The Beavers (3-5-1, 0-3 WCHA) stayed with UND through the first 10 minutes but the visitors exploded for three goals within a three-minute span midway through the first period to take control.
The spurt featured a pair of shorthanded goals by Dufault which sandwiched Sam LaShomb’s power play tally.
North Dakota (7-1-1, 5-1-1) maintained the 3-0 cushion the rest of the stanza and seven minutes into the second period UND upped the margin to 4-0 when Dufault completed her hat trick when she tipped the puck past Beaver goalie Jessica Havel who replaced starter Brittni Mowat at the start of the second period.
Bemidji State tallied its first goal at the 8:20 mark when Whitney Wivoda zipped a shot through traffic and past UND netminder Shelby Amsley-Benzie.
North Dakota answered in the stanza’s final minute, however, and owned a 5-1 lead after 40 minutes.
Each team scored in the third period. Jenessa Philipczyk notched BSU’s goal when she hustled into the offensive zone and sizzled a hard wrister over Amsley-Benzie’s shoulder.
Havel finished with 24 saves. Mowat had seven saves in her 20 minutes of work.
Bemidji State’s offense generated 18 shots.
The teams will stage the second half of their two-game series at 2 p.m. today at the Sanford Center.
