WOMEN'S HOCKEY: Beavers mount comeback for tie, conference point against UND
GRAND FORKS — Whitney Wivoda and Rachael Kelly each scored with 10 minutes to go in regulation in the BSU women’s hockey team’s game against North Dakota Friday.
But coming back from a 2-0 deficit on the road wasn’t enough for the Beavers.
After Josefine Jakobsen scored a 4-on-4 goal with under two minutes to go in regulation to give UND a 3-2 lead, the Beavers answered the call once again.
Kaitlyn Tougas scored an extra-attacker goal with 51.5 seconds to go in regulation to help BSU force overtime and, after a scoreless overtime period, earn a hard-fought point against UND.
UND won the shootout 4-3.
The Beavers (9-13-3, 6-11-2-1 WCHA) trailed 2-0 going in to the third period but Wivoda scored at the 11:48 mark with assists by Madison Hutchison and Morgan Williams to cut UND’s lead to 2-1.
Kelly evened the score with a power play tally a few minutes later with assists by Tougas and Miller.
However, the game didn’t get really interesting until the final two minutes.
BSU earned a late power play thanks to Becca Kohler’s checking penalty at the 17:01 mark, but the advantage was short-lived, as Kelly was called for hooking 39 seconds later.
The teams played 4-on-4 and just seconds after Kelly’s penalty UND took a lead with Jakobsen’s goal.
That would have ruined BSU’s comeback attempt but the Beavers didn’t let the late goal rattle them.
BSU head coach Steve Sertich decided to pull goaltender Brittni Mowat for an extra attacker with about a minute to go.
That move paid off, as Tougas redirected a puck in from Miller with 51 seconds left to force a tie.
Neither team had much of the advantage in the extra period — UND outshot BSU 2-1 — and the Beavers earned a point with the tie.
UND won the shootout on a goal by Kohler — the only one by either team in the shootout.
Amy Menke and Layla Marvin also scored for UND, giving them their initial 2-0 lead after one period.
UND outshot BSU 32-19 and Mowat made 29 saves while UND goaltender Lexie Shaw made 16.
The teams return to the ice tonight for the series finale at 7:07 p.m.
