WOMEN'S HOCKEY: Beavers battle Gophers but come up just short, 4-3
BEMIDJI — Hannah Brandt scored with seven minutes to play to lead the University of Minnesota women’s hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Bemidji State Saturday at the Sanford Center.
The victory increased Minnesota’s winning streak to 57 games but the latest triumph did not come easily.
The Gophers needed only 29 seconds to get on the scoreboard as Brandt notched the first of her two goals. Maryanne Menefee assisted on the tally.
BSU, however, answered with a pair of goals to take a temporary 2-1 advantage.
Jenessa Philipczyk tied the game at the 2:47 mark when she converted an assist from Rachael Kelly. With five minutes to play in the stanza the Beavers forged a 2-1 lead as Lauren Miller beat Minnesota goalie Amanda Leveille with a close-range slapper. Alex Citrowske drew the assist on the goal.
The Gophers broke BSU’s back with Terry Kelley’s goal with only eight seconds remaining in the stanza and the teams were even at 2-2 after 20 minutes.
Minnesota’s Rachael Bona tallied the lone goal in the second period as she slipped the puck past Bemidji State goalie Brittni Mowat 3:30 into the period.
The Beavers responded with the tying tally four minutes into the third period when Hanna Moher scored. Tess Dusik and Citrowske assisted on the goals.
The 3-3 deadlock continued until Brandt scored the game-winner late in the third period.
Minnesota improved to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in WCHA play while BSU dipped to 3-4-1 overall and 0-2.
BSU will return home Friday and Saturday when it hosts UND.
