Women’s hockey: Badgers complete sweep
BEMIDJI — Wisconsin preserved its No. 2 national ranking as the Badgers completed a weekend sweep of the BSU women’s hockey team Saturday with a 3-1 victory at the Sanford Center.
As was the case in Friday’s 6-0 Wisconsin victory, neither team scored in the opening period. The Badgers changed that status early in the middle session, however, as they scored on a power play and again shorthanded within the first five minutes.
Katey Josephs gave Wisconsin the lead with her powerplay marker at 3:18. A minute later Brittany Ammerman collected her 16th goal of the season while the Badgers were killing a penalty.
BSU drew within 2-1 early in the final period when Alex Citrowske beat the Wisconsin goalie at 3:49 with help from Kaitlyn Tougas and Madison Hutchinson.
The 2-1 score continued until the final minute but Wisconsin eventually iced the victory when Karley Sylvester scored into an open net after the Beavers had pulled goalie Brittni Mowat.
Mowat stopped 28 shots while BSU sent 20 shots on the Wisconsin net.
Saturday’s result gave Wisconsin a 19-3-2 overall record and a 15-3-2 WCHA mark. The Beavers, who travel to UND on Friday and Saturday, fell to 9-13-2 and 6-11-1.
