WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Warmack sets school blocks record in BSU loss to Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Sioux Falls earned a wire to wire 82-73 win over the BSU women Saturday in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action.

The loss is the fifth straight for the Beavers (8-12, 4-12 NSIC).

One bright spot for the Beavers? A night after tallying her 1,000th career point, senior center Kate Warmack moved into first place in school history with 119 career blocks. She finished Saturday’s game with 22 points and 14 rebounds.

Otherwise, it was all USF. The Cougars (12-8, 8-8 NSIC) scored the first seven points of the game and never looked back.

Consecutive three-pointers from Laura Johnson, Chrissy Strassburg and Bailey Bouman provided a 9-0 run for Sioux Falls that extended the lead to 33-18 with 5:33 left in the first half.

Aimee Pelzer and Morgan Lee scored the next eight points for the Beavers to trim the deficit to seven points at 33-26, but the Cougars ended the half on a 9-2 run to take a 42-28 halftime lead.

Johnson led the offensive attack for Sioux Falls by scoring 20 of her game-high 29 points in the first half. She finished the game with eight of the team’s 16 made three-pointers.

A three-pointer from Johnson pushed the USF lead to 20 points at 56-36 with 14:26 remaining.

Warmack and Jessie Althoff scored the next 15 points for the Beavers to help cut the deficit to single digits at 64-55 with 8:11 left in the game.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Taylor Varsho gave the Cougars a more comfortable lead at 77-61 with 4:21 left to play.

Varsho connected on five three-pointers and finished with 18 points.

BSU outscored USF 45-40 in the second half, but was unable to overcome the deficit.

Lee added 21 points for the Beavers.

BSU will return home next weekend to host Minot State and University of Mary to begin a four-game homestand.
