WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Tough schedule awaits BSU in 2014-15
BEMIDJI — The Bemidji State women’s basketball team certainly isn’t shying away from any challenges this year.
The Beavers, who finished 9-18 overall and 5-17 in the NSIC in 2013-14, play will play two exhibition games against Division I teams and two nonconference games against a pair of 20-win teams from the ultra-competitive Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
Three seniors graduated from last season but there are but has three freshmen and a junior college transfer set to join 12 returners for BSU’s 2014-15 season.
It kicks off Nov. 2 when BSU will travel to Grand Forks to take on North Dakota. BSU also travels to Fargo Nov. 7 to play North Dakota State.
UND won the Big Sky conference tournament championship and made its first NCAA Division I tournament in 2013-14. BSU has played in Grand Forks the past three seasons and has been competitive; last year the Beavers lost 78-66 .
BSU hasn’t played North Dakota State since Nov. 4, 2006, but beat the Bison 60-51 in Fargo.
Aside from the two Division I exhibitions the Beavers also take on Pittsburg State and Fort Hays State in the Radisson Hotel Roseville Classic Nov. 14-15, hosted by Concordia-St. Paul.
The Gorillas and the Tigers, both MIAA members from Kansas, each won 20 games last season and both were ranked in the NCAA Central Region rankings.
Pittsburg went 23-8 and made the NCAA Central Region tournament before falling to Wayne State in the first round.
Fort Hays finished 21-8 and just missed out on making the tournament — Concordia was ranked one slot ahead of the Tigers in the final region rankings and the Golden Bears received the final tournament slot.
BSU’s first home game is Nov. 21 against NAIA Mayville State. This will be the ninth consecutive year the Beavers and the Comets will play one another in Bemidji; BSU defeated the Comets 84-80 at home last season and have won eight straight versus MSU.
The 22-game NSIC schedule begins Nov. 29 at home against Minnesota Crookston.
Aside from a midweek game at Valley City State in January, the rest of the schedule is all conference opponents.
The final regular season road trip is set for Feb. 13-14 at U-Mary and Minot State before the regular season ends at home against MSU Moorhead and Northern State, Feb. 20-21.
