Women's basketball: Little went right as BSU struggles against Winona

Email

BEMIDJI — BSU could not find its shooting touch all night in a 62-31 loss to Winona State Friday at the BSU gym.

BSU, which entered Friday’s action shooting 38 percent from long distance, did not connect on a single 3-pointer in 20 attempts. It also just made 10 of 60 shots from the floor.

“Everyone in our conference had the same break, so we cannot use that as an excuse,” BSU head coach Mike Curfman said. “We are one of the better 3-point shooting teams in our conference. I would have never imagined us going 0-for-20.”

The Beavers got off to a hot start by making their first three shots from the field and led 6-5 after two minutes of play.

Winona State was able to execute against BSU’s zone defense, as it used a trio of 3-pointers to help build a 20-8 lead.

“Winona is a really good team and we knew we would probably give up some threes,” Curfman said. “To hold a team like them to 62 points is a pretty good job defensively. You just cannot shoot 10-for-60 and have a chance to win.”

Winona State extended its lead to 20 points and held a commanding 36-16 halftime advantage.

After the 3-for-3 start to the half, the Beavers made just four of their 26 field goal attempts.

The Warriors outscored the Beavers 15-5 in the opening 10 minutes of the second half to extend the lead to 30 points at 51-21.

Jessie Althoff led BSU’s offense with 10 points.

Morgan Lee and Kate Warmack entered the game averaging nearly 37 combined points per game but were held to just six points on 2-of-14 shooting.

“They played a zone and we did not do a good job of finding them,” Curfman said. “We found Kate really early in the game, but we did not find her after that.”

Abby Busch led Winona State with 15 points and eight rebounds.

BSU (6-5, 2-5 NSIC) will look to bounce back when it hosts Upper Iowa at 4 p.m. today.

“This is a very unusual loss for us,” Curfman said. “Other than Jessie Althoff, nobody on our team made more than one basket. We have to move on from it, because Upper Iowa is a big game for us.”
