The Bemidji High School girls hockey team bounced back from an early deficit to defeat Moorhead 5-3 Tuesday at the Sanford Center.

"You can tell that the team is really starting to gel," Bemidji head coach Bob Brink said. "It is a couple of months of really hard work from these girls that is starting to show off now."

Karleigh Wolkerstorfer and Francesca Huerd hooked up for three goals on the night for the Lumberjacks.

"That has been one of the lines that instantly clicked since they got together," Brink said. "They move the puck so well and it really showed tonight."

The Lumberjacks (8-8-1) will host Grand Rapids-Greenway at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Bemidji Community Arena in its next game.

Ashlie Talley gave the Spuds an early lead Tuesday with a goal in the eighth minute of the first period. Erica Ulberg was given the assist on the goal.

Bemidji answered four minutes later when Huerd assisted Wolkerstorfer, who put her shot past Moorhead goaltender Brianna Storms.

Storms finished with 32 saves on the night.

Bemidji wasted little time in the second period to grab its first lead as Allie Heifort fired a shot through the legs of Storms to make the score 2-1.

"It was huge," Brink said of the goal."It really set the tone for us. We played a great first period and did not have a lot to show for it, to continue the momentum by scoring so quickly was huge for us."

Just as they did in the second period, the Lumberjacks scored early in the third period.

Huerd's goal just 19 seconds in to the period gave the Lumberjacks a 3-1 lead.

Wolkerstorfer assisted on the play.

Tori Davis cut the Spuds deficit in half with a goal at the 5:26 mark.

Wolkerstorfer answered with her second goal of the night to increase the lead back to two goals.

With just over two minutes left in the game, Jenna Ulberg scored on a Moorhead powerplay to make the score 4-3.

"Moorhead is a real good team," Brink said. "If you give them any opportunities, they will take advantage of them."

As she was stumbling over a Moorhead defender, Allie Lapp sent a shot from the blue line to an empty net to secure the win for Bemidji.

Huerd picked up her third assist of the night on the goal.

Bemidji goalie Leighton Rockensock turned away 29 shots.
