Winter storm warning extended to 6 p.m. Monday; strong winds, colder temps expected

The winter storm warning that is in effect for the Bemidji area has been extended to 6 p.m. Monday, and the National Weather Service predicts 3-6 inches of snow, strong winds and colder temperatures.

The low pressure system which moved through the region over the weekend will combine with another low pressure system over northern Wisconsin on Monday. The big story will be the winds. North winds will increase to 25 to 35 mph with gusts over 40 in the Red River Valley and eastward. Near blizzard conditions are expected.

Temperatures are expected to fall below zero by Monday night with a low around 7 below.

Here's the latest forecast for the Bemidji area:

Overnight: Snow. Low around 18. Blustery, with a west northwest wind around 22 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Monday: Snow. Temperature falling to around 13 by 5pm. Blustery, with a northwest wind between 22 and 24 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Monday Night: A 20 percent chance of snow before midnight. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around -7. Wind chill values as low as -25. Blustery, with a northwest wind between 13 and 23 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 4. Wind chill values as low as -25. West northwest wind between 10 and 13 mph.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around -7. West northwest wind between 9 and 13 mph.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 4.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around -8.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near -1.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around -13.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 7.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around -12.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 10.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 1.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 22.
