Wiltse survives initial test

BEMIDJI — Jeff Wiltse of Bemidji outlasted Charlie Peterka of Little Falls in 23 holes to advance to today’s quarterfinals of the Senior Championship division.

Wiltse was the Senior medalist as he posted a 36-hole score of 148. Peterka qualified with a 160 but he gave Wiltse all he could handle in this No. 1 vs. No. 16 match-play battle.

Today’s quarterfinals will find Wiltse taking on Peter Rasmussen of Eden Prairie who stopped Bob Paine of Bemidji 3 and 2.

The other upper-bracket match will see Daniel Gilman of Centennial, Colo. facing Pete Passolt of Orono. In Wednesday’s action Gilman thumped Curt Howard of Sapupla, Okla. 6 and 4 while Passolt nipped Doug Taylor of Williston 1-up.

Wednesday’s lower-bracket winners included Jeff Tweeton of Perhan, Tom Allen of Bemidji, Todd Schaefer of Grand Forks and John McEnroe of Woodbury.

Tweeton bounced Bob Kobilka of Bemidji 3 and 2 while Allen tipped Pete Keeley of Bemidji 1-up. Schaefer eliminated Rob Noren of Bemidji 2 and 1 and McEnroe defeated Jeff Nelson of Bemidji.

Executive Championship

Lee Hetletved continued his move toward a second straight championship as the Grand Forks resident defeated Rick Barrett of Red Lake in the opening round of match-play.

Wednesday’s win advanced Hetletved to today’s quarterfinal match against Matt Mayer of Fargo who bounced Brad McEnroe of Minneapolis 2-1 in the first round.

Today’s other upper-bracket quarterfinal match sees Steve Lee of Albert Lea facing Derrick Johnson of Grand Forks. Lee eliminated Brian Knudson of Alden 2 and 1 while Johnson toppled Tim Gruidl of Edina by the same score.

Executive medalist Aaron Burnside of Detroit Lakes continued his stellar play Wednesday as he bumped Scott Woods of Alexandria 5 and 3. Russ Moen, the lone Bemidji resident alive in the field, advanced with a 3 and 2 win over Jay Pietig of Lees Summit, Mo. Burnside and Moen will lock horns at 1:15 p.m. today.

The other quarterfinal will see Dale Finck of Bertha squaring off against Derek Hasselberg of Princeton. Finck slapped Todd Witkowski of Zeeland, Mich. 3-2 Wednesday while Hasselberg slipped past Miles Schacher of Hawley 2 and 1.

Masters Championship

In Wednesday’s first round of match-play defending champ Joe Mayer had a bye, Jim Nelson of Houston, Texas thumped John Vinje of Bemidji 5 and 3, Richard Johnston of Bloomington tripped Rob Ostlund of Walker 1-up and Bill Enghauser of Bemidji stopped Rick Curb of Bemidji 3 and 1.

Wednesday’s lower-bracket results saw Jim Kennelly of Bemidji receive a bye, Tom Hanson of Detroit Lakes topple Vern Steinmetz of Fargo 5 and 4, Chuck Hiller of Crookston bounce Ed LeBeau of Bemidji 2-up and Gerry Douglas of Bemidji defeat Ken Riesberg of Mesa, Ariz. 4 and 2.

Junior Championship

Matthew Gregg of Bemidji advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7 and 6 win over Bauer Brown of East Grand Forks. Wednesday’s other winners were Charles Eickhof of Crookston, Keaton Wolf of Grand Forks, Gavin Loscheider of Grand Forks, Carson Hagen of Lakeville, Tyler Dunn of Omaha, Bobby Brink of Chaska and Austin Jensen of Grand Forks.
