Wilferd N. "Bill" Bergquist, 84, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at the Crystal Lake Inn Adult Foster Care near Detroit Lakes.

Wilferd Norris Bergquist was born to William and Nellie (Bakke) Bergquist on May 6, 1924 near Detroit Lakes. He grew up in Lake Eunice Township, where he attended grade school at District 23. Bill worked as an over-the-road trucker for many years. On July 21, 1946 he married Phyllis Schumacher at Augustana Lutheran Church in rural Detroit Lakes, where they became active members. In 1959 he moved his family to Lake Eunice and worked as a carpenter and contractor; he also operated a hobby farm.

Bill was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend. He enjoyed deer hunting, bowling, dancing with his wife Phyllis, and spending time visiting with his family and friends -- especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Bill will be remembered and missed by his wife of 62 years, Phyllis Bergquist of Detroit Lakes; his children, Bonnie Stach of Moorhead, Steve (Beth) Bergquist of Pelican Rapids and Larry (Jane) Bergquist of Detroit Lakes; six grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; brothers, Cecil (Marge) Bergquist of Detroit Lakes, Ralph Bergquist of Detroit Lakes and Charles (Marcella) Bergquist of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and sisters, Inez Haagenson of Detroit Lakes, Margery (Les) Laffen of Fargo and Carol (Larry) Fast of Champlin, Minn.

Preceding Bill in death were his parents and two sisters, Doris Jones and Aryls Lindblad.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26 at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27 at Augustana Lutheran Church, rural Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Jill Steichen officiating. Interment will be at Augustana Lutheran Church Cemetery in the spring of 2009.
