BEMIDJI – Firefighters and emergency responders rushed to a wildfire burning near Union Road in Hubbard County Tuesday afternoon, prompting some homes to be evacuated.

The fire was nearly contained by about 4 p.m., according to an email from Beltrami County Emergency Services Management. Nearby residents were allowed to return home after some brief evacuations.

There was no damage to any structures and no injuries during the incident.

An aircraft using flame retardants and a helicopter were deployed, along with officials from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the Bemidji Fire Department and sheriff’s deputies from Beltrami and Hubbard counties.

The fire began west and south of Rosby corner, south of Beltrami Line Road. Some roads in the area were closed off during the fire.

The fire came during a time of extremely dry conditions and unfavorable weather. The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for the area Tuesday.

In its warning, the NWS said low humidity and high winds with dry conditions “are expected to result in critical fire weather conditions across eastern North Dakota and northwest and west central Minnesota” Tuesday. It added that there was a chance of some precipitation Wednesday going into Thursday.

The dangerous conditions were evident in other parts of the state. Parts of the town of Karlstad, northwest of Thief River Falls, were evacuated Tuesday after a wildfire began there.

Road closure

The DNR has requested a road closure due to the fire conditions in northern Beltrami County.

Dick’s Parkway NW which is the short cut from Fourtown, MN to Warroad, MN (in Minnie, unorganized and Yale Townships located 95 miles northwest of Bemidji, is closed to everyone, except for those that have a house and proof they live there.

Law enforcement will be staged to prohibit entry from either end of Dick’s Parkway.

Hunters and other outdoor activities are prohibited in this area due to safety concerns.
