Where will BSU open the NCAA?
The question will be answered shortly after 10:30 a.m. today as part of the NCASA Selection Show on ESPN2.
Following action Saturday night the ranking of the 16 teams in the tournament have been decided.
The No. 1 seeds: 1) Boston University, 2)Notre Dame, 3) Denver, 4)Michigan.
No. 2 seeds: 5)Yale, 6) Northeastern, 7)Minnesota-Duluth, 8) North Dakota.
No. 3 seeds: 9)Vermont, 10)New Hampshire, 11)Cornell, 12)Princeton.
No. 4 seeds: 13)Miami of Ohio, 14)Air Force, 15) Ohio State, 16)Bemidji State.
One of the main criteria for the selection committee is seeding teams in a 1-16, 2-15, 3-14, etc. order. A second major criteria is avoiding first round match-ups between conference rivals.
This is where the fun starts in trying to predict where the teams will be placed. No. 1 seeds Notre Dame and Michigan cannot play No. 4 seeds Miami or Ohio State since they play in the same conference (CCHA).
That means top seed Boston University must play either Ohio State or Air Force in the first round. Staying as close as possible to the 1-16, 2-15, etc. philosophy that would mean Boston University would open with Ohio State (1 vs. 15).
That would leave Notre Dame facing off against Bemidji State (2 vs. 16). In which regional this game would be placed by the selection committee is anybody's guess.
In games Saturday night, Boston University won the Hockey East playoff title with a 1-0 win over UMass-Lowell; Yale defeated Cornell 5-0 to take the ECAC playoff crown; Air Force defeated Mercyhurst 2-0 to win the Atlantic automatic bid and UMD completed a huge run in the WCHA Final Five, defeating Denver 4-0.
The NCAA Tournament will be historic as bother Frank Serratore (Air Force) and Tom Serratore (BSU) have led their respective teams to the national event. It nearly happened last year as Air Force advanced with BSU falling to Niagara 3-2 in the CHA tourney final.
Since Air Force and Bemidji State are both No. 4 seeds they will be placed in different regionals. The only way the two teams would meet would be in the Frozen Four. That would mean both teams winning their respective regionals.
The public is invited to attended a BSU Selection Show Gathering at the 71 Bar Sunday morning.
