Dr. Angela Bremer and Leslie Staker of Explore Chiropractic have challenged Bemidji area residence to take control of their health.

During the third annual Bemidji Wellness Challenge, participants will learn about ways to improve their health through topics such as nutrition, stress management, organization, fitness and cleansing.

According to a 2008 study at HealthyAmericans.org, 23,160 Minnesotans are diagnosed with cancer each year and 25 percent are clinically obese, and Minnesota spends $258 per capita in medical costs due to obesity.

"These statistics are alarming and I am not going to sit around and let this happen to our community," Bremer said. "That's why we have decided to do something to change those statistics."

Explore Chiropractic and the Bemidji State University Gillett Recreation and Fitness Center have teamed up to co-sponsor the Bemidji Wellness Challenge. Participants are competing to win $1000. The challenge is set to kick off on Jan. 4. The registration deadline is Dec. 7.

"This year, we are kicking up the intensity," Staker said. "We are excited to get started and start the new year with a bang."

The Bemidji Wellness Challenge is a 10-week program for individuals who are looking to improve all aspects of their health - physical, biochemical and psychological. Participants will be given three Creating Wellness Assessments. With state-of-the-art equipment, participants will be given a score(wellness quotient) for their overall health The assessments will be given within two weeks prior to the beginning of the program, midway, and at the end of the program.

The participant with the largest increase in his or her wellness quotient will win $1,000. The participant with the largest percentage of weight loss will win an all-inclusive weekend getaway, including air fare, with six cities to choose from.

The focus of the challenge is to assist participants in their strength, cardio training and nutrition, all while experiencing life to the fullest with powerful lifestyle advice and motivation.

Each participant will receive weekly e-mails on fitness, nutrition and mental well-being, three Creating Wellness Assessments, a nerve scan analysis, use of BSU's Gillett Recreation and Fitness Center track, three Creating Wellness coaching sessions, wellness workshops, a T-shirt and more.

Assessments will begin Dec. 14. Participants must register by Dec 7 to participate. The cost of the program is $99.
