The First National Bank Lumberjack Bonspiel celebrates its 15th birthday Friday and Saturday and during the previous 14 years it has raised more than $210,000 for the Bemidji school district's high school and middle school programs.

Bemidji area residents are always looking for a reason to grab their brooms and slide a few rocks and the Lumberjack Bonspiel offers the perfect opportunity.

"In January we announced that teams were being accepted and by the middle of February the 48 spots were filled," said Jan Reierson who is one of the event organizers.

"We even have another 10 teams on the waiting list."

With 48 teams to accommodate and two days to complete the event, bonspiel organizers have to make a few adjustments.

Curling will begin 4 p.m. Friday and continue past midnight on the first day. The curlers will be back at the club at 8 a.m. Saturday and the championship matches probably won't start until 9 p.m.

In order to speed play a game will consist of four ends instead of the customary six.

Each team also is supposed to have at least two novice curlers among the foursome.

"The bonspiel is extremely necessary for our athletic programs," said BHS activities director Troy Hendricks. "We spend $40,000 annually just to keep our programs afloat and the money that is raised through the bonspiel and the Lumberjack Scramble golf tournament allows us to update our equipment and help finance other aspects of our athletic programs."

In addition to the curling the event features dinner and drawings for prizes that range from a flat screen television to season activity passes.

"It's a great time and the curling club will be filled with curlers and spectators," Reierson said. "Even if you aren't curling we invite you to stop by, have dinner and participate in the drawings."

Another fundraising event is set for April 1-2 as master hypnotist Scott Winger will give a pair of shows at the high school performing arts center.

Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. both days and all proceeds will be used to help fund Adult Day Services and Bemidji High School activities.

Tickets are $10 and may be obtained at the high school, Overbeek Music, Coyote 102.5 and at Adult Day Services.

BHS spring campaigns begin Saturday

After a week break from competition the spring sports action begins Saturday as the boys and girls track and field squads participate in the Lions Invitational at the BSU Rec Center.

Saturday's action begins at 1 p.m. and kicks off an aggressive track and field schedule that will include another visit to the Rec Center on April 5 for the Little Amik 2 meet and, hopefully, a trip to Moorhead on April 15 for the start of the outdoor campaign.

The Lumberjacks will host one outdoor meet, the Bemidji Invitational May 23.

Monday marked the start of practice for the baseball team and the boys and girls golf squads. The baseball team is scheduled to begin its season April 7 against Brainerd but time will tell if that becomes a reality.

The scheduled opener for the boys golf team is April 13 at Detroit Lakes while the girls are supposed to visit Monticello on April 6.

Last Monday the softball and track and field teams began their practice schedules. The softball team hopes to start its campaign April 9 at home against Fergus Falls.

Next Monday the boys tennis team will have its initial practice. The Lumberjacks are scheduled to begin their competitive season April 7 at Perham.

BHS winter sports teams hold banquets

The wrestlers will celebrate their state-meet season 6 p.m. Thursday at the high school while the boys basketball team will stage its post-season event 5:30 p.m. April 3 at the middle school.
