This week at Bemidji High School: Regular seasons nearing their end
Bemidji Minnesota P.O. Box 455 56619

The goal of all high school sports teams is to be playing their best at the end of the regular season and for some of the Bemidji squads that time is at hand.

Monday the girls gymnastics squad hosted Perham and the Lumberjacks have only two more opportunities to test themselves prior to the section meet on Feb. 16.

On Jan. 31 BHS will travel to Park Rapids and the regular season will end Feb. 2 at home against Detroit Lakes.

Monday’s meet gave the Jacks an accurate indication of what it will take to do well at the section meet because Perham is one of the top teams in the section.

The girls and boys skiers also are nearing the end of their regular seasons. Because of poor snow conditions the Lumberjacks have seen limited competition this winter. Bemidji has participated in only five of its eight scheduled meets but the Jacks hope to close the year with a bang as they host an invitational at Buena Vista on Saturday and another at Three Island County Park on Jan. 31.

Those meets will represent the final tune-ups for the section competition which is scheduled for Feb. 5 at Camp Ripley.

The end of the regular season also is within sight for the girls hockey team. Saturday at the Sanford Center BHS continued its late-season success when it scored four goals in the final period to spill River Lakes 4-1.

Saturday’s victory gave the Jacks a 6-1-1 record in the past eight games and vaulted Bemidji over .500 for the first time this winter with a 7-6-5 mark.

This week the Lumberjacks continue their four-game homestand with today’s game against East Grand Forks and Thursday’s contest against Crookston. Both games will be played at the Community Arena.

On Saturday Bemidji heads to Alexandria for a 3:15 p.m. game.

The regular season will end with a home game against Moorhead (Jan. 29) and road tests at Roseau (Jan. 31) and Brainerd (Feb. 2).

The boys hockey team experienced mixed results over the weekend. On Friday Bemidji throttled Monticello 9-1 but Saturday night the Lumberjacks were dominated 8-1 by Hermantown.

The weekend results gave BHS a 6-11-1 record heading into Friday’s game at East Grand Forks. On Saturday the Lumberjacks will hit the road once again, traveling to Alexandria for a 7:30 p.m. game which will complete a girls/boys doubleheader.

The basketball teams both lost over the weekend. On Friday the girls (3-13) dropped a 50-44 home game to Crosby-Ironton while the boys (1-12) were defeated 79-72 Saturday at Fargo South.

Today the girls host Fargo South for their only action of the week. The boys team has two games as it entertains Grand Rapids Thursday and heads to Cloquet on Friday.

The wrestlers are coming off a very productive weekend which saw Bemidji finish second at Saturday’s 17-team invitational hosted by Thief River Falls.

BHS claimed three individual championships as Logan Crosby won the title at 126 pounds, Kade Johnson at 170 and Alex Johnson at heavyweight.

Dylon Sauceda finished second at 120 pounds and Brian Maas was third at 113.

The wrestlers will put on a few miles this week as they travel to Alexandria today and to Badger-Greenbush-Middle River on Thursday. In today’s triangular the Lumberjacks will tangle with the home team at 5 p.m. and Little Falls at 6:30 p.m.

The swimmers and divers also are in action today as they travel to Detroit Lakes for a dual meet.

On Saturday BHS was fourth of six teams at the Section 5 True Team meet held at the high school pool while Detroit Lakes placed third.

The Jacks were led by Tyler Hemp who was third in the 100 breast stroke. Hemp also was fifth in the 200 free as were Sam Howard in diving and Matt Arndt in the 100 breast stroke.

Following tonight’s action Bemidji will have two more regular-season meets on its schedule - Feb. 2 at Hibbing and Feb. 7 at Duluth East. The Lumberjacks will host the Section 5A meet Feb. 22-23.
