Those teams will be back in action this week and joining them will be the other fall Lumberjacks programs.

This week’s schedule began Monday as the boys and girls cross country squads made their debuts in Moorhead and the tennis team participated in the Brainerd Invitational.

Today’s schedule includes a pair of home events as the volleyball team tests itself against Perham at 7:15 p.m. and the swimmers entertain Brainerd at 6 p.m. Today’s action also sees the boys soccer team heading to Detroit Lakes for a 7 p.m. contest.

On Wednesday the tennis team will stage its home debut as it welcomes Grand Rapids and East Grand Forks in a triangular starting at 2 p.m.

Thursday also is a very busy day and headlining the schedule is the football team’s season opener at Grand Rapids. Also on Thursday’s docket is a volleyball match at Detroit Lakes and the girls soccer game at Detroit Lakes.

Before the various section tournaments begin the Lumberjacks fall sports teams will be involved in 110 events. Topping the list is the volleyball squad which has 20 events, including tournaments at Apple Valley, Hopkins and St. Michael, on its schedule. The soccer teams will square off against 16 regular-season opponents while the cross country teams will make eight road trips in addition to hosting their invitational Oct. 15 at Greenwood, and the tennis team has 13 dual meets and three tournaments on its slate.

The swimmers will hit the pool 14 times prior to hosting the Section 8A meet on Nov. 8 while the football team will be home Sept. 6 against Sauk Rapids, Sept. 27 against Rocori, Oct. 11 against Alexandria and Oct. 16 against Moorhead. In addition to Thursday’s game at Grand Rapids the Jacks will visit Fergus Falls on Sept. 13, Sartell on Sept.20 and Brainerd on Oct. 5.

Last fall was a spectacular season for the Bemidji programs as four of the teams captured section championships and both cross country teams sent individuals to the state meet. Repeating that success this fall will be a challenge.

Among the state participants last year was the volleyball team as Teresa Colligan’s squad posted a 20-7 regular season record and owned a 23-7 mark after defeating Alexandria, Monticello and Fergus Falls in the Section 8-3A tournament.

During the state meet the Lumberjacks went 1-2, losing to Blaine, defeating Owatonna and falling to Roseville.

The BHS volleyball program made its second consecutive trip to the state tournament last year. The football program, however, is the school’s veteran in terms of state experience.

In 2012 the Jacks won their fourth straight section title and defeated Moorhead in the first round of the state tournament. The season came to a halt in the state semifinals when Bemidji was blanked 23-0 to eventual state Class 5A champion Totino-Grace.

Returning to the state semifinal game and playing in the Metrodome are among this year’s team goals and BHS coach Troy Hendricks would not be surprised to see the Lumberjacks accomplish that task.

“I really like what I see so far,” Hendricks said about his team’s prospects. “I’m extremely excited about what this team can do. “We’re going to be a fun team to watch.”
