Winds will gust up to 30 mph at times in the Red River Valley, but any accumulations of snow are expected to be light, the National Weather Service office in Grand Forks says.

Temperatures aren't expected to reach 40 degrees in Grand Forks for a high, and the low could hit the freezing mark, according to the weather service.

Some counties just west of the Red River Valley - including Ramsey, Benson, Pierce, Griggs and Nelson counties - are getting rain and accumulating snows, perhaps 1 to 3 inches with isolated 4-inch totals. Elevations and ground temperatures could cause that amount to vary greatly. Those counties are part of a winter weather advisory today.

There is a winter storm warning, meanwhile, for a five-county area that includes the cities of Jamestown, Carrington and Harvey, N.D. That area expects two to four inches of snow with difficult, even dangerous travel conditions this morning and northwest winds of 10 to 25 mph that might put stress on tree limbs and power lines, according to the weather service.

Snow is covering highways and interstate stretches over much of south-central and southwestern North Dakota, the weather service says.

A freeze watch is issued for some north-central North Dakota counties, with towns such as Belcourt and Bottineau affected.
