We should all be as decent as Walt Scott

I read with great sorrow of the death of Walt Scott. He and his wife Rachel were truly wonderful people; warm, open, intelligent, compassionate and kind.

It was my great good fortune to work with Walt and Rachel on many community projects helping others and I learned so much from them. One of my fondest memories is of going to see Walt when he was in assisted living at Tamarack. He asked me what I had been doing and I told him of my work with the Tree Trust Foundation helping inner city youth work in city parks and of my then ongoing work with our military in Colorado Springs as they engaged public and private partners in defense of our nation against the threat of terrorism. After listening to me he said this: “I am most grateful for your work with children.”

His pacifism did not permit him to support my work with our military, but he did not say so; he did not criticize me. Instead he chose to focus on my work with children and to support and encourage it.

Would that we were all as wise and decent as Walt. I am not, but he continues to inspire me to try harder.
