Turnovers were the name of the game on Sunday afternoon as Bemidji State University was forced into 25 turnovers in a 64 to 44 loss to No. 9 Wayne State College. The Beavers were unable to get into an offensive flow from the onset as they had 16 turnovers in the opening period alone. BSU falls to 5-8 (2-7 NSIC). Wayne State improves to 13-1 (10-0 NSIC).
The Wildcats were led by Ashley Arlen, the NSIC Preseason Player of the Year, with 24 points. Eva Benson came off the bench for eight points. Mara Hjelle and Clare Duwelius each added seven for Wayne State. Alyssa Fischbach led Wayne State to a victory on the glass with 10 boards. The Wildcats outrebounded the Beavers 38 to 36. Wayne State outshot Bemidji State 41.1 percent to 30 percent.
The Beavers were paced by Colleen McKay (Sr., C, Barnum, Minn.) with 12 points and nine rebounds as she shot five for 10 from the floor. McKay ends the weekend averaging 15 points and nine rebounds after scoring 18 points and tallying nine rebounds in the BSU's upset victory over No. 21 Augustana College on Saturday. Ellie Wessling (Fr., G/F, Winsted, Minn.) came off the bench for 11 points. Freshman Melissa Borstner (G, East Bethel, Minn.) added eight points.
BSU was forced into 16 turnovers in the first half as Wayne State went into the locker room with a 33 to 21 lead over Bemidji State. Arlen led the Wildcats with 16 points on six of 10 shooting including three of five from beyond the arc. Bemidji State outshot Wayne State from the field 45 percent to 37.5 percent. The Beavers and Wildcats each had 18 rebounds in the first half however Wayne State controlled the offensive boards with eight to BSU's three.
Bemidji State was paced in the first half by McKay with six points and four rebounds. Samantha Baldwin (Jr., G, St. Thomas, N.D.) and Borstner each added four points.
The Beavers fall to 22-13 all-time against Wayne State with Sunday's loss. The Wildcats stay unbeaten in conference play.
BSU will head to St. Cloud State University and Concordia University, St. Paul next Friday and Saturday for a pair of NSIC matches.
