Mondale, 86, attended the funeral and reception for his wife, Joan, on Saturday along with Vice President Joe Biden and former President Jimmy Carter.

Mondale served under Carter from 1977 to 1981. He was alsoMinnesota attorney general, U.S. senator and U.S. ambassador to Japan. He ran unsuccessfully for president in 1984.

Known as “Fritz,” Mondale also stepped in to be the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party candidate for U.S. Senate after then-Sen. Paul Wellstone died in an airplane crash in the final days of the 2002 campaign. He lost to Norm Coleman.

Mondale is the senior statesman in Minnesota, the last prominent DFL politician of a generation that included another former vice president, Hubert Humphrey.

The son of a Methodist minister, he was born Jan. 5, 1928, and lived his early years in the southwestern Minnesota community of Ceylon.
