Jacob Andrew Young, 22, of Walker was sentenced for second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon to 46 months in a Minnesota Correctional Facility. Young has been credited with 184 days time served.

Young was accused of stabbing Jace Ugrich of Bovey in the back at a party in Frohn Township on Sept. 29. Ugrich was stabbed while trying to break up a fight at the party, according to the criminal complaint. The injury partially collapsed his left lung.

Judge Paul Benshoof reviewed a victim impact statement during court on Friday that included Ugrich’s inability to play football or hockey during his senior year of high school due to the injury. Neither Young or Ugrich had anything to add when asked by Benshoof for comment.

“It is unexplainable as to why you would stab someone in the back,” Benshoof said.

Young initially plead not guilty but amended his plea in March to guilty. Prosecuting attorney for the state, David Frank and defense attorney Michael Undem agreed on the 46 month prison term. Young must pay a $1,000 fine plus $3,500 in restitution.

Young was also sentenced to 90 days and a $50 fine for an assault while in jail.

While attempting to identify the man who stabbed Ugrich, later identified as Young, the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office had issued a $1,000 reward for information.

Young’s criminal background includes a felony conviction for possession of a short barrel gun in Stearns County and a second-degree burglary charge in Hubbard County.
