Walker-Hackensack-Akeley advances in 8A East

THIEF RIVER FALLS – Top-seeded Walker-Hackensack-Akeley and No. 2 Mahnomen will battle for the East Sub-Section 8A boys basketball championship 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Ralph Engelstad Arena here.
The two favorites held serve during Saturday’s sub-section semifinals as WHA thumped Kelliher-Northome 82-58 and Mahnomen edged Blackduck 67-64.
Blackduck (11-16) gave Mahnomen (20-4) all it could handle as the Drakes led 35-31 at the break and kept the pressure on the Indians in the second half.
Trey Volk scored 13 points in the first half to pace Blackduck’s attack and finished with 19. Shane Fenske contributed 13 and Brad Kusper 11.
Mahnomen’s offense was centered around Jake Pavek as he tallied 24 points. Pat Porter added 13 and Tom Pavek 10.
WHA opened a 39-28 lead at intermission and widened the margin in the second stanza.
Caleb Ginos scored 21 points for the Wolves (24-2) and Anthony Fisher contributed 20. Chris Duff finished with 17 and Austin Richter 13.
The Mustangs (17-8) were paced by the 20-point effort of Isaiah Rahier. Also reaching double figures was Tristan Williams with 10 points.
