Waldo E. Kjos, 78, of Hitterdal, died Saturday, March 8, 2008 in Hitterdal.

Waldo Eugene Kjos was born to Einar and Alpha (Krogen) Kjos on April 1, 1929 and lived with his family in Hawley. After his mother's death, he lived with an aunt in Hansboro, N.D., for several years before returning to Hawley. Waldo served his country in World War II, enlisting in the U.S. Navy when he was 17. While in the Navy, he served on three different ships. After his discharge, he returned to the Hawley community. Waldo married Darlene Erickson Schultz on Aug. 20, 1950 in Hawley. They made their home in Hawley for a short time before moving to Hitterdal, where they continued to live until Waldo's death.

Most of Waldo's working years were spent as a heavy equipment operator throughout Minnesota. He was also employed by the Clay County Highway Department as a grader operator and assisted with snowplowing. Darlene and Waldo took pride in keeping an immaculate yard, and enjoyed visiting with family and friends, admiring the flowers.

Waldo enjoyed owning, riding and training horses. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, woodworking, sunsets at Height of Land Lake, carting around numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren in his jeep and golf cart, and spoiling his dogs, Tilly and Teddy. Waldo will be missed by all who knew him.

Surviving Waldo are his loving wife of 57 years, Darlene; eight children, Todd (Arlene) Kjos of Hitterdal, Shirley (Ron) Gwin of Mapleton, N.D., Wayne (Melanie) Kjos of Ulen, Kristi (Vernon) Prestegord of Twin Valley, Mike (Jenny) Kjos of Hawley, LuAnn (Ole) Larson of Lake Park, Jim (LouAnn) Kjos of Ulen and Lynnette (Ross) Wagner of Brainerd; 30 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; a sister, Ruby Halvorson of Spokane Wash.; neighbors, Curt and Carolyn Lofgren who have been like family; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Waldo in death were his parents; brothers Mickey, Dan and Clifford; and sisters Maye, Alice and Ardie.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, all at Salem Lutheran Church, Hitterdal.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, at Salem Lutheran Church, Hitterdal, with the Rev. Jim Hulberg officiating.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Bryan Gwin, Brandon Gwin, Tyler Larson, Brett Larson, Beau Kjos, Josh Kjos, Nick Kjos, Taylor Kjos, Wesley Wagner, Casey Wagner and J.R. Prestegord. Honorary pallbearers will be all of the rest of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Military honors will be provided by Ulen VFW Post 5115 and Ulen American Legion Post 412, with interment in the East Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Hitterdal.
