Eight dog pro mushers will compete for a combined purse of $6,000. They will leave at 10 a.m. Saturday Jan. 12 from Northome High School and finish at Marcell between 5 and 8 p.m. that night. That race can be viewed at Northhome, Barney’s Resort on Sand Lake and Marcell.
“We are excited to have the race in a new format this year with all races starting at Northome, said race marshal Dan Bergerson in a press release. “ Since safety of the mushers and dogs is our primary concern we needed this last bit of snow to ensure the race could be held.”
Trophy racers will leave Northome High School at 11 a.m. Jan. 12 and run 22 miles to Squaw Lake School. That race is expected to finish between 1 and 3 p.m.
In addition, veterinarian checks will take place from noon to 7 p.m. on Friday Jan. 11 at Northome High School.
The public is invited to see the racers and dogs either before the races or during the vet checks.
Meals will be served at Northome on Friday evening and Saturday mornin and all day Saturday at Mandis Café in Northome. The Powerhouse Bar and Grill and the Northome Liquor store will also have food and refreshments.
