VOLLEYBALL: Bemidji State drops match to Minot State, 3-0
BEMIDJI – The Bemidji State volleyball team found itself on the losing side again after a 3-0 (25-23, 30-28, 25-19) loss to Minot State Saturday in a NSIC play.
The Beavers now fall to 4-19 overall (2-14 NSIC) while Minot improves to 6-20 overall (2-14 NSIC). The loss brings Bemidji State’s all-time record against its Beaver counterpart to 6-1 dating back to 1977.
BSU kept it close in all three sets but never managed to overcome Minot. Minot State racked up 11 aces on Bemidji State in the match.
In the first set, BSU found itself behind 22-19 and on the verge of disappointing first set loss, but three straight kills by senior Bethany Thompson evened the score at 22. BSU failed to capitalize on the momentum from the strong effort exhibited by Thompson and Minot took three of the last four points to win the first set 25-23.
In the second set, BSU took the lead at 17-12. Minot State called a timeout and went on a run, eventually tying the score at 28-all.
After that, Minot’s Shari Hewson took control of the set and ended the game with back-to-back aces to win it.
BSU took a large 14-8 lead midway through the set but Minot State answered back, going on five-point run to bring the score to 14-13. Minot went on to take 12 out of 17 points to win the third set 25-19.
Thompson led BSU with 15 kills on 31 total attacks. Setter Courtney Volkmann had 29 assists in the match. The Beavers’ attack was complimented by sophomore Kelsi Crawford, who totaled nine kills, and freshman Chelsea Frison who added five.
BSU travels to the of Minnesota Duluth to face the Bulldogs in a mid-week NSIC matchup on Thursday.
