WADENA – The Bemidji High School volleyball team couldn’t keep its initial momentum going.

After taking the first game against Wadena-Deer Creek by a convincing 25-9 score, the Lumberjacks let it slip away. The Wolverines won the next three games (25-20, 25-22, 25-14) to take the match 3-1 Thursday afternoon.

“They beat us defensively,” BHS head coach Teresa Colligan said. “That’s what it came down to: Defense.”

The Lumberjacks (16-6) looked very good in the first game, allowing the Wolverines (16-6) to score only nine points.

But the Jacks couldn’t sustain it.

“Our momentum kind of went down after the first game,” Colligan said. “All of our intensity levels kind of lacked, too.

“They picked up their game and we didn’t.”

Jess Yost led the Lumberjacks in kills with 19; she also led the squad in digs with 23.

Allie Heifort had 18 kills, while Alexa Greendahl notched 36 assists.

Defensively, Blake Bardwell led the way with seven blocks while Yost added five. Jasmin Yerbich had 19 digs.

The Lumberjacks have two dates remaining on the regular season schedule. They will travel to the Alexandria tournament Saturday, where they’ll take on the likes of Rocori, Elki River, Grand Rapids and Brainerd. Wadena-Deer Creek will also be in the tournament.

After that, the Jacks travel to Lake of the Woods Tuesday for their regular-season finale.
