Virgil Gould Heathman was born August 12, 1915 to Gould and Mary Heathman in Iowa. Virgil and his parents moved to northern Minnesota from Plover, Iowa, in 1917 to a farm near Shevlin, and his parents moved to Bemidji in 1929 to open a grocery store and he took over running the farm, but in 1932, he moved to Bemidji and drove a bus route. Then he bought an Aberdeen, S.D., bus line in 1943, which he sold when he was called up to serve in the U.S. Army 96 Division on Okinawa. Virgil was a member of the Bemidji City Council for more than seven years and as Bemidji’s mayor from 1957-1958. Virgil bought the grocery store from his father in the 1950’s and in 1960 he built a new store on 200 block of Paul Bunyan Dr. NW. He sold the store in 1964 and retired for a few years, but not liking retirement, he was the manager for the municipal liquor store until 1969 and at that time he retired and made their home on Fox Lake and Harlingen, Texas for 43 years.

He is survived by his children, Donald (Karen) Heathman of Yorktown, VA and Mary Kay (Douglas) Heggie of Aberdeen, WA; 6 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren and special friend Donna Hauge.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; 2 grandsons, Dale Heggie and Tom Heggie; 2 great-grandsons, Andrew Heathman and Ryan Heggie; sisters, Grace and Zella and brother, Henry.
