Virgil Cummins

Virgil Cummins, 76, of Pelican Rapids, died on Wednesday, December 17, 2008, at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes.

Virgil was born the son of Melvin and Leona (Foner) Cummins on July 25, 1932, in his grandparents' home near Glenwood, Minn. He attended school in Sedan, Minn., and worked on the family farm in his youth. On Jan. 20, 1951, Virgil married Elsie Bowen in Glenwood. They moved to Benson, Minn., where he delivered milk for a short time and worked in produce later becoming produce manager at C & H Merchantile (Custer & Hornbacher).

In 1956, the couple moved to the Fargo-Moorhead area, where Virgil worked at Northport Super Valu (later known as Hornbacher's) as produce manager, winning several awards for his displays. From 1968-80, they owned and operated the Lake Eunice Resort near Audubon. During these years, Virgil continued his employment with Hornbacher's.

In 1980, Virgil and Elsie moved back to Fargo, where they remained until 1984, when they moved to Dunvilla, Minn., near Pelican Rapids, commuting to Fargo daily until Virgil retired in 1994. Elsie died Dec. 23, 1990. Virgil lived in Dunvilla until the time of his death.

Virgil was a member of: the Benson and Fargo Jaycees, Moorhead Rod & Gun Club, Cormorant Lakes Sports Club and Zion Lutheran Church. He loved the outdoors especially fishing, hunting, and golfing. He enjoyed bowling, and particularly liked playing cards with anyone who was willing. His greatest enjoyment was in spending time with his family.

Virgil is survived by his children, Patti Cummins (Jerry Kalvik) of Detroit Lakes, Joyce (Craig) Grahn of Pelican Rapids, Robin (Steven) Busch of Lake Park, Mike Cummins of Fargo and Pamela (Tom) Olson of Pelican Rapids; 10 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; sisters, Elaine Schwendemann, Dorothy Vollan, Gloria (Donald) Town, Violet Razink, Margie (Dan) Hoff and Bonnie Federation; as well as his brother, John (Carol) Cummins.

Virgil's wife Elsie and parents Melvin and Leona preceded him in death.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21 at Zion Lutheran Church, Pelican Rapids, with a 7 p.m. prayer service.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at Zion Lutheran Church, Pelican Rapids, with the Rev. Dale Pepelnjak and Intern Pastor Jacob Anderson officiating.

Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery at a date to be determined in the spring. Larson Funeral Home, Pelican Rapids, is handling arrangements. An online guest book is at
