The NHL Network visited Bemidji and profiled the story of George Pelawa during its televised draft coverage Saturday.
Pelawa was a hockey star at Bemidji High School and was the 1986 Mr. Hockey award winner. He was a first round draft pick of the Calgary Flames and a University of North Dakota hockey recruit. He died in a car accident north of Bemidji on Aug. 30, 1986 before he was to start fall classes at UND.
There video includes interviews from George's parents, Frank and Winnie, and his brother Joe. Also interviewed were George's Lumberjacks teammates Mike Amble, Jason Meyer and Rob Aitken.
Retired Bemidji police captain Robert Lehman, Dallas Stars scout Bob Gernander and former Calgary Flames General Manager Cliff Fletcher also talk about Pelawa.
