VFW wraps up regular season
A very successful regular season for the Bemidji VFW baseball team will come to a close today when the Vets head to Moorhead for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
Moorhead is battling Perham for the second seed in next week's district playoffs while Bemidji has already secured the top spot.
The Vets enter today's action 18-0 against district foes and 20-4 overall, all of the losses coming against Legion programs. A sweep today would give Bemidji an unbeaten record against district foes.
"It's always a challenge when you play Moorhead," Vets coach Brad Johnson said. "Moorhead is one of Bemidji's top rivals and it's always fun to play against them."
The double-elimination district playoffs begin Thursday and Bemidji and the eventual No. 2 seed will earn first-round byes. In addition to Bemidji, Moorhead and Perham, the field includes Fergus Falls, Detroit Lakes and East Grand Forks.
"We actually don't have anything to play for Saturday but Moorhead needs to win to claim that No. 2 seed and have the bye," Johnson said. "But we don't plan on backing down. We want to play our best so we will be in tip-top condition when the playoffs start."
Trent Baker and Cody Jenkins are scheduled to start on the mound and each will be limited to 75 pitches.
"What I want to see is our pitchers throwing strikes, our defense making the plays and our offense doing its job," Johnson said. "No matter who you are playing, a coach wants to see those three things."
