VFW tops TRF to stay alive in district tourney
PERHAM -- Despite an early loss, the Bemidji VFW baseball team is still alive in the Minnesota District 9 tournament.
After receiving a bye in the tournament, the No. 2 seeded VFW squad fell to third-seeded Fergus Falls 9-5 Friday morning.
The loss dropped Bemidji to the consolation bracket in the double-elimination tournament. That meant the VFW had to play Thief River Falls later Friday to stay alive.
Bemidji survived, beating Thief River Falls 10-9 after a wild seventh inning that saw Thief River Falls scored six times in the top of the seventh to tie the score at nine before Bemidji sealed the game with a run in the bottom half. A missed bunt on a squeeze attempt foiled Bemidji's first attempt at the win before a bases-loaded single took care of business.
Bemidji will take on either East Grand Forks at 1:30 p.m. today. The winner of that game will play either Fergus Falls or Perham at 4 p.m. today to earn a spot in the championship game.
