The players and coaches of Bemidji's VFW baseball team held their initial practice Sunday night.

Brad Johnson serves as the head VFW coach and also is the top assistant on the Bemidji High School varsity. He has been busy helping guide the Lumberjacks into the state tournament and, because of that extended season, the early VFW practices had to be put on hold.

Monday at the BSU diamond, however, the Vets showed that they didn't need too much practice as they dismantled Detroit Lakes 16-0 and 10-1.

Connor McNallan pitched a no-hitter in the five-inning first game and Ryan Hirt allowed two hits in the second game. The two hurlers also combined to walk only three while the offense took advantage of 18 hits and 13 walks in the twinbill.

Cody Labernick paced the attack in the opener as he delivered a pair of 2-run singles.

Mitch Buckanaga helped fuel the 12-run third inning with a 3-run double.

Detroit Lakes didn't have a man on base until the fourth when McNallan issued a walk. He also yielded a free pass in the fifth but neither runner advanced past second.

The rematch followed a similar storyline as Hirt threw strikes and Detroit Lakes struggled on offense.

Bemidji returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Thief River Falls for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
