The Bemidji VFW took another solid step forward toward a District 9 league title Friday, sweeping outmatched Detroit Lakes 17-o and 11-4 at BSU.
It lifted the Vets to 12-4 in league play with four games remaining, all against East Grand Forks.
Two take place today at Sagedahl Field at 1 with the return pair Monday a East Side.
Detroit Lakes sank to 5-13 with two to play. Three of its five wins have come over East Grand Forks.
Bemidji had a field day at the plate against the weak DL hurling, pounding out 11 hits in each game.
The opener ended quickly with Bemidji scoring 11 times in the second inning and closing out the game in five.
Matt Schneider coasted behind the big lead, pitching a two hitter while fanning four and walking only one. It was his third win in four decisions.
Only one runner got as far as third and one other reached second.
A walk, Kris Berndt's single and an infield out sent home one in the first.
In the second, six hits, three walks, a hit batter and four DL errors made up the barrage with Kevin Murphy's double and Collin Leif's three-run triple the big blows in the frame. Four more hits, including doubles by Booster Russ and Chase Vogt, accounted for five more runs in the third.
Tyler Fode left after that frame with Tanner Twigg working a scoreless fourth.
Berndt, Leif, Vogt and Jake Urban all had four hits for Bemidji with Leif driving in four runs.
The second game was closer, but not much. Bemidji scored in five of its six turns at bat off Nate Field who went the route, walking seven. Four more errors hampered the losers.
Urban went the route for Bemidji, spacing 11 hits but stranding 12 runners. He fanned one and walked three in leveling his record at 2-2.
DL had its only lead of the day in the first on two singles, a walk and Bemidji error.
The Vets countered with four on Mitch Hendricks' double, singles by Berndt and Vogt, a walk, hit batter and two errors.
It became 4-1 in the third on another pair of boots.
A pair of singles around a stolen base cut the lead to 5-2 in the fourth.,
Bemidji matched this on Leif's double and Schneider's single and moved to a 9-2 lead in the fifth on two walks, a hit batter and hits by Cole Bardwell and Berndt.
The final two Dl runs came in the sixth on three hits around a dropped fly ball.
Bemidji came back with two on a walk and singles by Hendricks, Berndt and Murphy.
Vogt had three hits and Hendricks and Berndt two. Vogt drove home four runs. Brian Labat had three and Josh Eggebrath and Field two for the losers.
The sweep lifted Bemidji's overall record to 16-8. It holds a 1½ game lead over Perham in the district race.
