VFW baseball: Bemidji wins district title, earns spot at state tournament
THIEF RIVER FALLS - Bemidji is headed to the state VFW baseball tournament in Mankato and on Aug. 9 the Vets will open the event against a representative from the southwestern corner of the state.
After stopping East Grand Forks 3-2 in nine innings on Friday in the district tournament opener, Bemidji advanced to the championship game with a 2-0 Saturday triumph over Perham.
Perham came through the loser's bracket to earn a rematch against Bemidji on Sunday. The Vets continued their success, however, downing Perham 5-1 and winning the district title.
In Saturday's contest Bemidji used Parker Lucas' single and stolen base, and Brady Eckman's single to score the only run it would need.
The Vets added an insurance tally in the sixth when Collin Rutledge and Eckman singled, Seth Anderson was hit by a pitch and Austin Weidemann walked.
Rutledge went the distance on the VFW mound and allowed only two hits while striking out eight.
In Sunday's rematch Bemidji took control with three in the lower second.
Consecutive bunt singles by Daniel Johnson, Cody Anderson and Lucas Goins loaded the bases and two runs scored when Thomas Revering singled. Rutledge followed with a single to score Goins.
Revering's RBI single and Eckman's bases-loaded walk drove in a pair of insurance tallies in the sixth.
Seth Anderson was the winning pitcher. He struck out five and walked two.
Bemidji will take a 24-5 record into the state meet.
