Vets sweep EGF
The Bemidji VFW swept East Grand Forks Saturday at Sagedahl Field to come within one day of clinching the District 9 League title
Bemidji rolled to an 11-1 win in the opener then held off the visitors 5-4 in the nightcap.
It lifted the Vets to 14-4 with two games remaining at East Side Monday afternoon.
Ryan Stevens (2-1) and Ernie Heifort (1-1) will get the starting calls with the remainder of the staff available for relief, if needed.
East Side managed no opposition in the opener which Bemidji won with an eight-run second inning. It scored single tallies in the third and fourth to end the game after 4½ frames.
The winners managed only five hits off Brandon Beiswenger but profited from walks and errors.,
The visitors scored in the first on two walks and two singles against Matt Schneider. But Schneider limited EGF to two more hits the rest of the way, fanning six and walking three, to gain his fourth win in five decisions.
Bemidji tied the score in its first at b at without a hit.
In the big second, four walks and two errors were joined to four hits, two singles by Zach Solheim and a double and single by Jake Urban.
Bemidji scored again in the third without a hit and got its final run in the fourth on Collin Leif's double, a ground out and sacrifice fly.
The nightcap appeared to be headed in the same direction.
For Bemidji scored four times in the first with Cole Bardwell's infield single the lone hit.
Four walks and two hit batters staked Bemidji to its lead which seemed safe through the first three innings with Kevin Murphy on the hill.
But East Side scored in the fourth on a single and double around a walk.
Bemidji got this back in the last of the frame on a missed pop up, stolen base and Murphy's doubled off the center field fence.
That proved to be the game winner as East Side parlayed four hits into two runs in the fifth and took advantage of the only two Bemidji errors of the game to score once in the seventh.
But Murphy got the final out on a grounder to short to preserve the win.
He fanned four and walked three.
Bardwell's single and Murphy's double were the only Bemidji hits.
The Vets had their leadoff runner reach third with no outs in the fifth but were unable to get him home.
Bemidji will take a 16-8 overall mark to East Side for Monday's finale.
The District 9 meet will open Thursday at Detroit Lakes with games between the 3-6 and 4-5 seeds.
Bemidji and probably Perham will draw opening round byes and begin play Friday with Bemidji facing the lower seed if it gains the regular season title.
